The Story Behind the Addmotor Freetan M‑368X Full‑Suspension Recumbent E‑Trike

From the beginning, Addmotor has been driven by a simple but powerful mission: to make the joy of riding accessible to everyone—regardless of age, physical ability, or riding experience. For more than a decade, we have dedicated ourselves to building electric tricycles that restore freedom, expand mobility, and redefine what comfort can mean on three wheels. The Freetan M‑368X represents the purest expression of that mission.

The Freetan M‑368X is more than a new model—it is the culmination of a two‑year pursuit of absolute comfort, engineering purity, and uncompromising ride quality. Every curve, every joint, every millimeter of adjustability reflects a development journey defined by persistence, failure, reinvention, and breakthrough.

1. Two Years of Research and Development

The Two-Year Journey: From Failure to Breakthrough

The Freetan M‑368X began as an ambitious idea that took two full years to mature. Early in development, the team explored a left‑right swing mechanism, investing six months, eight design iterations, and three prototypes—yet none met Addmotor’s stability and safety standards.

A turning point came from market feedback. Inspired by simplicity and reliability, the team made a decisive shift: abandon unnecessary complexity and focus on full‑suspension comfort and a low‑step, universally accessible frame.

Minimum Turning Radius

The most challenging design of the lead engineer's career

The Freetan M‑368X is the result of 12 months of dedicated work from Addmotor's lead designer. Among all models he has created, this trike stands as the most technically demanding—engineered to deliver the most comfortable riding experience ever offered by Addmotor, while balancing aesthetics, practicality, and universal usability.

2. Core Design Innovations & Engineering

Full Suspension

Structural Design for Comfort & Adaptability

Full-suspension system: Tuned for riders around 200–250 lbs, it offers a 4–5 cm compression range—firm at first, then progressively softer with use.

Ultra-tight turning radius: Executes a full 180° turn within a single car lane, with the left wheel remaining nearly stationary.

Multi-point adjustability: Fits riders from 5'1" to 6'7". Includes automotive-inspired sliding pedals and a 90° to 170° adjustable seat & backrest, ideal for lumbar concerns or rehabilitation.

Low‑step through frame: Ensures effortless mounting and dismounting—one of Addmotor’s most beloved design advantages

Advanced Engineering & Elite Workmanship

Premium Aesthetics
Fully Internal Cable Routing

Fully Internal Cable Routing

Brake, shift, and electrical lines are completely hidden inside the frame. This requires complex internal grooves and precision threading procedures, delivering a clean, premium appearance with zero exposed cables while protecting the wiring system.

Self-developed Universal-joint Steering

Self-developed Universal-joint Steering

Moving beyond off-the-shelf U-joints with large play, Addmotor engineered a steel gear-mesh universal joint. Using custom-molded components, this innovation eliminates steering looseness and delivers unmatched precision and feedback.

Heavy Duty
Three-wheel-specific Torque Structure

Three-wheel-specific Torque Structure

Adapted from motorcycle engineering, this reinforced, oversized tubing system was redesigned for trike-level torque loads. Key areas use custom-molded parts and have passed rigorous heavy-load and stress testing.

High-difficulty Assembly & Support

Due to the sophisticated internal routing and limited space, internal cable replacement requires a dedicated pull-string tool. To ensure a seamless experience, early production units will include custom installation accessories provided by Addmotor to assist customers with maintenance.

Upgraded Performance & Safety

Self-developed Steering

Self-developed Steering

Instead of off-the-shelf U-joints with large play, Addmotor engineered a steel gear-mesh universal joint with custom-molded components—eliminating steering looseness and improving precision.

02
Battery Technology

Battery Technology

Uses full-potting thermal gel (similar to Kirin standards) for enhanced heat dissipation, waterproofing, and safety. The mid-section aluminum shell increases cooling surface to prevent thermal runaway.

03
Reinforced Chain System

Reinforced Chain System

The secondary chain is upgraded to a motorcycle-grade thickened chain. This solves previous issues of twisting or breakage under high torque loads, standard on all trikes since last October.

Additional components: We've introduced a chain guide wheel to avoid foot interference and a side-mounted front basket with a custom-molded M-head integrated into the injection mold.

3. New Color & Aesthetic Direction

Avocado Green

Avocado Green

Inspired by Addmotor’s helmet design, custom‑mixed for a soft yet modern tone. It reflects a new visual identity that is vibrant yet sophisticated.

Bay Blue

Bay Blue

A lighter, more refreshing shade that visually reduces the mass of the large frame. Both colors pair with our signature orange wheel rims, creating a recognizable identity.

Freetan M-368X

A New Benchmark for Comfort

The Addmotor Freetan M‑368X is not simply a recumbent e‑trike—it is the most ambitious comfort‑focused platform Addmotor has ever built. Born from two years of iteration, failure, and breakthrough, it represents a new standard for full‑suspension recumbent riding, universal adjustability, and precision engineering.

Ride in Comfort. Move in Freedom. Freetan M‑368X.

In the next chapter, we will take a closer look at how the Freetan M‑368X transforms these engineering breakthroughs into real‑world riding advantages—its performance on varied terrain, its ergonomic philosophy, and the unique rider scenarios it was built to empower.
